Private Piano Lessons

Private piano lessons for all levels and all interests—
online or in-home.

Through our professional work in live performance, composition, and course design for the post-secondary classroom, we have a deep understanding of the creative process, the music learning process, and the language of music itself.

There are many approaches to playing the piano. What we cover is classical piano performance, contemporary keyboarding, and jazz piano improvisation.

Classical Performance

Lessons in classical piano performance focus primarily on developing musicianship through reading, writing, and performing notated music, in accordance with the standards and practices communicated through the Royal Conservatory of Music Syllabus. This includes acquiring rudiments theory knowledge and focusing on technical facility, ear training and sight-reading, whilst developing repertoire. While most of the repertoire explored will be pieces composed during the Common Practice Period, we also leave room in our lessons to learn contemporary pieces that convey the classical piano style for the students who show keen interest in performing piano adaptations of scores composed for film, anime movies, and similar branches of music.

Contemporary Keyboarding

Lessons in contemporary keyboarding focus primarily on developing the styles and practices of piano playing in non-traditional, groove-based styles of music, such as pop, rock, singer-songwriter, R&B, and more. In these lessons, a strong emphasis is placed on ear training, rudiments theory, chord theory, and rhythmic development to learn repertoire. Students who take contemporary keyboarding will learn how to play as both a soloist and an accompanist, and will explore musically relevant topics including song form, part writing, and music production. Many of our piano students have expanded their musicianship to incorporate singing into their practice and have learned the skill of self-accompaniment as singers.

Jazz Piano Improvisation

Lessons in jazz piano improvisation focus primarily on researching the historical practice and distinctly African American art form known as Jazz. Students will develop their musicianship by studying the work and accomplishments of prominent contributors to jazz, including Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Barry Harris, Herbie Hancock, and others. In these lessons, a strong emphasis is placed on rudiments theory, jazz harmony, jazz composition, ear training, time-feel, and rhythmic coordination to develop and expand students’ improvisational skills.

Lesson Recommendations

The following recommendations are the minimum lesson time requirements for learning and development. In our experience, students who follow these recommendations see greater results in their comprehension and performance of music. Students who spend more time with an instructor receive more than just feedback in their lessons. They receive guidance and other reinforcements that empower students to practice more successfully week after week. For students taking theory lessons that are 30 minutes or longer, there is the option of taking the theory lesson online and on a different day than their practical lesson.
