Meet Your Instructor

Joanna Borromeo is a vocalist, pianist, composer, a Juno-nominated recording artist and, as of 2024, a sessional music instructor at the University of Calgary. Since graduating in 2004 from the Humber College Jazz Program in Toronto, she has maintained a professional freelance career that has taken her to venues and major music festivals throughout Canada, the US, and abroad.

Joanna received her Grade 10 Piano Certificate with First Class Honours from the Royal Conservatory of Music in 2000. After graduating from the Humber College Jazz Music Program in 2004, she embarked on expanding her musical horizons working with numerous bands of varying musical styles, performing on stages big and small, and offering her incredible creative skills to other projects.

Students are hard-pressed to find a more intuitive, approachable, understanding, and talented music instructor than Joanna. In her decades-long teaching career, she has taught well over a hundred students. The experience she’s gained from working with so many individuals is invaluable, as its allowed her to perfect a teaching style that shows students can learn much more than they would expect in under a year of lessons—and have a lot of fun in the process.

Joanna’s favourite things in life are taking her dog Lucy for walks and visits to the dog park, spending time with her partner and family, road trips, reading, sipping on a good cup of coffee in the morning, and soaking in the summer days.

Joanna works with a few great musical projects and performs regularly as a pianist/keyboardist throughout the city with:

  • David Lavoie Quartet (jazz; performs every Tuesday at Betty Lou’s Library on 17th Avenue)

  • Redline Trio (jazz; performs as a monthly guest, also at Betty Lou’s Library)

  • Calgary Without Patriarchy (contemporary art music; visit their website for updates)

  • SideOne (award-winning event band)
